Sign Up TODAY for
Fall Classes!

September is National Sewing Month! Join the fun by learning a new skill in one of our fabulous fall classes.

If you haven’t been in our new Downtown store yet, now’s the time to visit (and to take a class!). Our new classroom space has just been renovated and equipped with brand new Pfaff sewing machines.

We offer an array of beginner and intermediate level classes in apparel sewing, fashion design, garment alterations, quilting, home decor, and needle arts. And for your kids, we offer semester-long sewing and fashion design classes in our After School Stitch program, starting September 10.

New to this semester, is fashion designer and artist Rosalba Valentino‘s “Style and Substance” class. This class is designed to teach the intermediate sewer how to take their garment construction to the next level. You will learn how to obtain a better fit and how to professionally finish your garments.

Also new this semester is Rosalba’s “Mischief and Madness” Halloween Costume workshop in October. Rita Camacho, a professional in the sewing industry, will also teach a Halloween-themed class titled “Style it up for Halloween.” Both classes are designed to aid you in your costume making ventures.

New classes start the first week of September, so check here for a full class listing and then go to the calendar page in order to sign up! (click on the class you want to join and fill in the requested information)

Hope to see you in the classroom!

Sailboat Dress SEWN
(and a skirt!)

This little dress came together quite quickly and turned out really sweet. We just adore Sarah Jane’s Out to Sea fabric collection, perfect for your summer sewing.

We were also thrilled that we could make a simple skirt out of the leftover fabric. So with just 1 1/4 yards of fabric we made a size 6 dress and coordinating skirt in a size 8.

We’re not sure which is our favorite detail: the red vintage plastic buttons on the back or the blue wrapped piping detail on the front.

All materials are in stock at Les Fabriques if you want to make your own Sailboat Dress.

Sew a Little Sailboat Dress

When we saw these dresses online in Sarah Jane’s Out to Sea sailboat fabric, we knew we needed to make up a little dress in this fabric for the shop.

We picked out a simple KWIK SEW pattern (3940) which calls for a coordinating fabric and trim. We chose a fine pique cotton and some sweet piping. Check back soon for a picture of the completed dress!

Want to sew along? Fabrics and pattern are available at Les Fabriques!

Costume Party Inspiration: Fashion in the Twenties

The Twenties decade ushered in a radical change toward freedom for women. Women finally obtained the vote in national elections and this birth of “women’s liberation” had a resulting liberating effect on women’s fashion. Corsets and petticoats vanished and hem lines rose to reveal silk-stockinged legs. Necklines and waistlines plunged.

Elastic girdles and bandeaux flattened the feminine curves into the “garçonne” (boyish) silhouette straight out of Paris. The “Flappers” look was born. This style’s simple cut made the perfect shape for mass production, providing the lower and middle class access to the Parisian couture influence. Egyptian, Greek and Asian influences were also for the first time incorporated into American fashion.

The fashion ensemble dominated all levels of dress. Shoes, hats, bags and coats all coordinated. Foreheads were covered by over-sized hats, turbans, headbands, and, of course the cloche. The “bobbed” hair cut was a necessity to fit under this new style of head dress.

The Twenties woman was “bejeweled” with an impressive array of accessories including bracelets, long ropes of pearls, cigarette holders, silver compacts, and “pochettes” (a small pouch-like purse). Coco Chanel influenced the birth of “costume” jewelry into fashion for the first time in history.

Are you ready to be “bejeweled”?! We hope this Twenties fashion overview has given you some ideas to get you thinking about designing your own Twenties look for our Great Gatsby Open House costume contest. For more inspiration take a look at our Great Gatsby Inspired pinterest page or stop in at Les Fabriques for fabulous fabrics and trims. We are offering a Roaring 20 (‘s) % discount off any purchase!

Join us Friday, June 7 from 5-9 pm as we celebrate our new downtown store and this decade of fashion decadence. Enjoy local food, wine, music and celebrate with a costume contest.

Sew and Show

After Minh Martin finished sewing his coat, his daughter Sophia decided she needed to sew a coat of her own! They visited Les Fabriques one weekend to pick out fabric and a pattern and were back a weekend later to show off their fabulous coats.

We think Sophia’s choice of purple flannel lining makes for a fun surprise detail. Great job Martins – we can’t wait to see what you’ll make next!

Carla spent her snow days whipping up a wardrobe of dresses for her granddaughter. Here’s sweet baby Kennedy dressed in her new owl dress, perfect for a downtown outing (and a game of peek-a-boo!).

We are hosting numerous new beginner sewing workshops this Spring including patchwork quilting, umbrella making, and sewing some quick and easy tote bags. A majority of our City Market Tote Bag students below had never sewn before and left this workshop with a completed and beautiful tote bag!

Also new this spring, is our City Market Project series for kids on Saturday mornings. Each week features a new project (you can choose to attend one session or the whole series). Space is still available in upcoming sessions. During the first session last weekend, Lily made this fabulous Fox pillow that she designed from her own drawing.

We hope you’ll come sew with us (or stop by and show us what you’ve been sewing). For a list of our current classes, view our schedule online here.

Les Fabriques Reopens Tomorrow!

Les Fabriques (first named A Bazaar, Fabrics Etc.) opened its doors in September of 1978 as the creative vision of mother-daughter team Charlotte and Carla (pictured above). Since that first opening in Lovingston, Virginia, Les Fabriques has inhabited ten different spaces (including one in Richmond). From four different locations at the Barracks Road Shopping Center (1984-1996) to Shopper’s World (1996-2010) to the most recent shop at Woodbrook (2011-2013), Les Fabriques has traveled for 34 years along route 29!

We are so excited to get off the highway and move to historic downtown Charlottesville. Our beautiful new space is located at 206 E. Water Street, at the corner of 2nd and Water, directly below the Water Street parking garage (the space was formerly London Bathecary).

We can’t wait to open our doors tomorrow and get back to what we love doing best: creating together with you, our fabulous customers and friends!

Downton Abbey Inspiration

At Les Fabriques, we love a good sewing challenge. So when we heard that the Paramount was going to simulcast the third-season premiere of “Downton Abbey” we jumped at the chance to sew something to wear for the occasion.

In the third season of “Downton Abbey,” the characters are carried into the fashions of the roaring twenties. Our beloved characters are seen wearing low waisted dresses with straight bodices, adorned with a plethora of embellishments and paired with cloche hats.

For our twenties looks, we each took on a different challenge. Kimberly (pictured below, left) restored a vintage twenties silk and velvet dress. Carla (middle) sewed a silk kimono jacket, paired with “pajama pants” (trousers for women became popular in mid-twenties). Jaime (right) sewed a silk dress from a vintage twenties pattern called “The One Hour Dress” (see pattern here).

The fashions of Downton Abbey are wide-spread in their influence, inspiring American and European designers alike. The Washington Post’s Lifestyle section feature “Fashion from Costume to the Runway” highlights some of the Downton Abbey-inspired looks that have made their way onto the runway. Here are a few of our favorites:

From Ralph Lauren’s 2012 Fall Collection:

And his 2012 Spring Collection

From British designer Jenny Packham:

This season’s Project Runway All-Stars also featured a twenties-themed design challenge in which All-Star designer Anthony Ryan’s flapper design took the lead.

At Les Fabriques, we hope to inspire you too! So come on in and find what you need to sew something beautiful.

Fleece Animal Print Scarves

Just in time for your last-minute gifting is another quick-sew scarf! With a myriad of super soft fleece prints and colors to choose from, and a great price (currently all fleece is 30% off), you can make one for everyone on your gift list (that’s only $2.75 per scarf)! This fleece is from David Textiles, Inc. and washes beautifully without any pilling.

Here’s how to make your own Fleece Scarf:

Materials needed:
1/4 yard of Fleece
coordinating thread

Instructions:
1. Fold fabric in half, right sides together (long sides together) and pin. Place a “warning pin” (use another color pin, or place two pins side-by-side), four inches from each end.

2. With a 1/2″ seam allowance, sew the long pinned edge, back-stitching at beginning and ends. Remember to leave the four inches at the beginning and the end unsewn.

3. Turn scarf right-side out. You will now create the loop. To do this, match short ends of scarf, right-sides together, making sure that the unsewn lengths are on the same side (you will not sew the unsewn sides till the last step). It is easiest to pin one length together and then as you are sewing, stop, and leaving the material in the machine, pin the other sides. You will sew completely around the circumference of the scarf. This will make more sense as you do it!

4. Now for a little hand-sewing. Turn scarf so it is completely right-side out. Fold the seam allowances in and pin the unsewn 4 inches that you had left on each side. Hand-sew with a blind stitch.

5. Wear or gift scarf!

Shimmer Infinity Scarf

This Shimmer Scarf is great as a last-minute handmade gift or as a fun accessory to wear to your holiday parties – you can easily whip up several of these in an afternoon. And to make it even easier for you, Les Fabriques has Shimmer Scarf kits available for $15 with the fabric already cut!

Here’s how to make your own Shimmer Scarf:

Materials Needed:(all can be purchased at Les Fabriques)
1/4 yard of Matte Sequins (stretch) fabric
1/4 yard of 100% Silk Charmeuse fabric
Coordinating thread

Instructions:
1. Square up your fabric edges, cut off selvedges, and even out widths of the two fabrics. We used a rotary cutter to square the edges of the sequined fabric because it’s stretch makes it difficult to cut a straight edge with scissors. The beginning widths of these fabrics varied, so we cut off some of the length of the silk to match the length of the sequined fabric. With seam allowances, our scarf was 47 3/4″ long and 9″ wide.

2. Pin right sides of fabric together. Viewing your scarf with the length running horizontally as pictured below, place a “warning” pin four inches over from the bottom left end and four inches over from the top right end. You will leave these opposing 4-inch lengths unsewn in order to create the infinity loop. In the first step of sewing you will not sew the width (i.e. the shorter sides).

3. With a 1/2″ seam allowance, sew both long edges, back-stitching at beginning and ends. Remember to leave the four inches on each long edge unsewn.

4. Turn scarf right-side out. You now will create the twisted loop. To do this, match short ends of scarf, right-sides together, with opposite fabrics (i.e. match the silk to the sequined). It is easiest to pin one length together and then as you are sewing, stop, and leaving the material in the machine, pin the other sides. You will sew completely around the circumference of the scarf. This will make more sense as you do it!

5. Now for a little hand-sewing. Turn scarf so it is completely right-side out. Pin the unsewn 4 inches that you had left on each side. Hand-sew with a blind stitch.

6. Wear or gift scarf!

Dmitry may have won Project Runway, but who will win Les Fabriques’ 3rd Annual Project REVEAL on November 11?

The Challenge: This year’s challenge is themed on the “House of Thomas Jefferson”. Here in the heart of Virginia, where Thomas Jefferson has remained a long-lasting influence, we recognize his genius in design and invention. That is why we have selected “T.J.” as the ultimate challenge for Project REVEAL.

The Designers: Come meet this fabulous group of Virginia designers as they present the results of five months of sewing and designing in this exciting runway show (some will even model their own designs!).

The Prize: A brand new PFAFF sewing machine!

Make Your Stache!

Hurray for Halloween!!! Here is a quick and easy project to make an instant disguise for all ages.

To make a mustache, read below to find the materials needed (most can be purchased at Les Fabriques) and to follow our easy tutorial.

Materials needed:

Alexander Henry “Where’s My Stache?” fabric
Red 100% Cotton Flannel (for backing)
Fabric glue
Pellon Peltex 72F Double-Sided Fusible Ultra Firm Stabilizer
Paper straws or wooden dowels

Instructions:

  1. 1. Cut out a strip of mustaches and coordinating amount of flannel and stabilizer.
  2. 2. Fuse the three materials (stabilizer sandwiched in between mustaches and flannel) according to stabilizer instructions.
  3. 3. Cut along the lower line of the mustaches, removing the fabric below the mustache. Coat the top of the straw with fabric glue and pull apart the fused fabrics in order to wedge straw in between the layers.
  4. 4. Fuse the layers again to seal the straw in place. Cut out the rest of each mustache.
  5. 5. Wear your ‘stache!
